To support our worldwide veneer sourcing activity here at Mundy Veneer we have developed a customised due diligence programme to assess the sustainability of each and every veneer we sell.
Along with any available certification, which includes FSC and PEFC though not exclusively, we also assess provenance, supply chains, management practices and geo-political factors including trade status, corruption and labour practices.
We apply this wider due diligence net because not all speciality veneer comes from large managed sources, which might fall outside FSC forestry criteria and yet these veneers can be sustainably sourced.
Whilst ensuring compliance, our expert buyers select on quality so you can be assured that a Mundy Veneer product is not only responsibly sourced but also of top quality.
Our Sustainability Checklist
SPECIES - Declaration of common and latin names on all invoices. Species checked against the IUCN (International Union of Conservation of Nature) Red List of endangered species.
SUPPLIER - Company details verified and supplier relationship status assessed. Verified if subject to EUTR (European Union Timber Regulations)
DOCUMENTATION - To evidence our due diligence, we check that comprehensive details from invoice to shipping are included on all documentation, including certification for CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) if applicable.
PLACE OF HARVEST - Details of where the tree was grown and felled is sourced and cross checked with its endemic range on the IUCN red list.
CPI SCORE - We check the country of origin's Corruption Perceptions Index to assess levels of bribery and mismanagement in the public sector which could affect the classification and legal supply of timber.
PLACE OF ORIGIN - Details of the manufacturing origin of wood - where it is milled, sawn and/or sliced cross checked against the country's CPI ranking.
CERTIFICATION - Check certification status, eg FSC 100% or FSC CW (Controlled Wood) and ensure this is added to the invoice details. We also check the FSC portal to ensure a supplier's certification exists and is valid.
FINAL EVALUATION - We score all of these elements against a critical points threshold. If the score falls beneath, we request additional details of the full log supply chain, from forest to our warehouse in Somerset. If criteria is still not met, we do not accept the wood.
